Tibetan dZi bead 1BC – 400AD
The ancient Tibetans did not have the name or concept of "Pure dZi" because the name dZi itself symbolizes the top grade bead among the "Stones from Heaven", whenever the beads have huge cracks, the colour is light, it is broken or too small are called "ChungdZi", therefore it is not necessary to have another "pure dZi". As mentioned in the previous section, "pure dZi" is only miscommunication between Tibetans and foreigners, later being literally translated by some people and resulted in this incomprehensible name.
According to the Tibetan legends, dZi is the worn out accessories of Vajrayogini (In this Series Chapter 3 - "Sacred Stone From Heaven, Beneficial to All Mankind"), its meaning is: "no dZi is perfect, there are always defects in dZi". It seems that "dZi" has its rules of standard, but actually, those rules have a wide range of flexibility, and it is necessary to have this flexibility because "there are always defects in dZi"! Thus, if there are always defects in dZi, then how big is the defect before it is acceptable, what kind of defects are acceptable as 'dZi", or whenever there are cracks would put under the grading of "ChungdZi"? Black and white or brownish white series, which one is considered as "dZi"? What colour tone, or what size would it be accepted as standard etc..., all these areas are very argumentative. Everything should have a bit of space and flexibility, this is the nature of all Asians, this is the characteristic that Western people could not understand, to put in a higher level of saying, it is "The Philosophy of the Asians". If sees from the perspective of humanity, when the dZi does not belong to oneself, then any small or big defect on the bead will be criticized, however, when the dZi belongs to oneself, all the defects are acceptable because "there are always defects in dZi". Once mentioned this to a skeptical friend: "Let me have a look at the dZi you are wearing, even though you think that this is the most satisfactory dZi, I can still find its flaws and criticize for half a day, there is no flawless dZi in this world!" This friend was awed into silence.
